Ivan Djaja’s doctoral dissertation

Dragana Stolic

Djaja earned his PhD in 1909 after defending his thesis Etudes des ferments des Glucosides et des Hydrates de Carbone chez les Mollusques et chez les Crustacés (Study on ferments of glycosides and carbohydrates in mollusks and crustaceans) at the Sorbonne.

Djaja dedicated this comprehensive 250-page study to his mentor, professor Albert Dastre (1844-1917), a French physiologist and a member of the French Academy of Sciences and a student of Claude Bernard (1813-1878) and Paul Bert (1833-1886) who was especially successful in the field of physiological chemistry. Accoding to the Preface, Djaja conducted his research between 1905 and 1909 at the Laboratory of Physiology at the Sorbonne, at the Biological Station Roskoff and at the Marine Biology Research Institute in Brittany which was founded in 1872 by professor Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers (1821-1901) who taught at the Sorbonne. In the Preface Djaja expressed his gratitude to Zivojin Djordjevic, a zoology professor at the University of Belgrade who in 1910 suggested Djaja became an assistant professor at this University.
