The evaluation of the scientific work through the citation analysis represents one of the methods applied throughout the world and in our country. There are two reference institutions in Serbia (University Library “Svetozar Markovic” in Belgrade and Matica Srpska Library in Novi Sad) which make bibliographies of cited works according to the data bases Science Citation Index and ISI Web of Science (WOS) which are financed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.

Citation is based on citation bases which are issued by the Institute for Scientific Information which is part of the Thomson Reuters in Philadelphia.

Citation is determined at the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” in Belgrade according to the following sources:

  • 1961–1979 Science Citation Index in paper format
  • 1980–1995 Science Citation Index on CD’s
  • 1996–2015 Web of Science over the Academic network

Matica Srpska Library in Novi Sad owned Science Citation Index in paper format from 1945 to 1979.

The overview of professor Ivan Djaja’s citations was done at the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” in Belgrade.

According to the information from the data bases Sciеncе Citаtiоn Indеx (1980–1995) and Wеb оf Sciеncе (1996-2015) there are 74 citations and there are 779 citations in paper format (1945–1979).

The first cited paper was published in 1914: GIAJA J (1914). Sur l'action de quelques ferments sur les hydrates de carbone de la levure. C.R. Seances Soc. Biol. 77:2

The paper which is most citied and which has been cited for the last 5 years (2009–2014) was written in 1956: GIAJA J, RADULOVIC J (1956). Survival of the heart following deep hypothermia. Nature. Dec 8;178(4545):1286.

Based on the total number of citations (779) one can see that even though a centrury has past since Djaja’s death, the papers of this renowned Serbian scientist are not forgotten. It should be pointed out that Ivan Djaja was famous in the scientific circles all over the world at his time. Even today, when technology and science are developing very fast and the works from the past grow old, many scientists still use Djaja’s works in their research which proves the progessiveness of his ideas and achievements.
