Structure of information in libraries
During the course, participants will learn about the concept and characteristics of metadata; some of the widely used metadata schemes; the term digital object and its characteristics, as well as the structure, methods of description and display of digital objects in library repositories.
Metadata and the possibility of mapping
As librarians are increasingly required to have complete knowledge of the process of creating and mapping metadata, due to the process of digitalization of collections that is rapidly taking place in libraries, practical work takes place in the following stages:
– a comparative view of the format for describing physical objects and the format for describing digital objects,
– metadata mapping process,
– possible ways of transferring metadata from one system to another,
– mapping of the COMARC format with individual schemas for metadata,
– presentation of possible ways of storing and searching digital objects,
– simulation of work in Phaidra repositories.
Required prior knowledge
Knowledge of the process of cataloging library material in automated library systems is required.
Duration of the course
The course lasts 2 days for 3 hours. The number of participants is from 8 to 12.
